For the Mont Blanc area at the Vintage Winter Fest, we were inspired by a variety of things that convey the idea of “freeziness, pureness, etherealness”, with a slight touch of melancholy and nostalgia. Something like listening to songs from The XX while walking during a frosty winter day.
Yes, we don’t actually get anything icy and snowy here in Shanghai, but let’s plan future trips to see Icelandic landscapes to get in the mood. Since taking an intercontinental flight is just too “mafan”, a must-see is certainly the Changbai Mountains (长白山) in the Jilin - Heilongjiang - Liaoning area, close to North Korea. It’s a natural reserve with gorgeous freezing birch woods, breath-taking waterfalls, pine-trees, glimmering lakes. So huge and wild that it has Amur leopards and Siberian tigers in it.
Taking a trip to see the ice sculptures in Harbin should also be in everyone’s “to-do list”. And speaking of which, Tim Burton’s “Edward Scissorhands" was also very inspiring, especially its winterish and emotional soundtrack that immediately brings us back to the 90’s (as in the Ice-Dance scene, featuring Winona Ryder and evergreen Hollywood darling Johnny Depp).
The Mont Blanc soundtrack is the kind of music that goes well with hazy views of snowy mountains from outside a windowsill: dream-pop, sounds of winterish bells crafted by synthetizers, a little bit of shoegaze. It goes from the powerful and ethereal indie-rock of Wild Nothing to the lovely experimental synth-pop of Grimes.
As for the style that is in line with all this hazy and winterish imagery, we were inspired by John Galliano's 2009 Fall/Winter show, with models that walked the runway as frozen Ukranian brides and ice queens. The flawless and gorgeous dresses were meant to make them look like they'd been walking in the snow for hours, every model had glittering coins encrusted over her head, and the make-up was an elaborate mix of frosty colors (silver, gold, baby-blue, lavender) and fake icy tears.
